A Tennessee driver has expressed his frustration after being forced to pay more than $7,000 following a wrongful DUI arrest, despite being sober. Reid Hawley, along with his wife, was stopped by law enforcement during a routine DUI checkpoint after a dinner outing. The incident has sparked outrage as Hawley, a 67-year-old man, was wrongly accused and put through an exhausting legal battle.
Hawley recalled that he had consumed only one drink during the evening, but had also eaten a substantial meal. Confident that his blood test would prove his sobriety, Hawley was certain he was under the legal limit for alcohol. Yet, even after this, he found himself being detained by law enforcement officers in Sevier County, near Knoxville.
A state trooper claimed that Hawley exhibited signs of impairment and failed a field sobriety test. Despite Hawley’s belief that he was completely sober, he underwent additional testing, including a breathalyzer, which later showed no traces of alcohol in his system. “I said, ‘Oh really, you think you want to let me go now?’” Hawley shared during an interview with CBS affiliate WDBJ7. His disbelief turned to shock when the trooper allegedly responded, “‘No, you’re under the influence of something.’”
Hawley was then arrested and his bond set at $1,000. Although the arrest took place on August 10, 2019, Hawley has only recently spoken about his ordeal, shedding light on what he considers a gross injustice. The situation didn’t improve after the arrest; it dragged on for months.
Five months later, Hawley received the results of his blood test. The findings confirmed that he had no alcohol in his system but did contain prescribed medication. There were also no illegal drugs detected. Despite these results, Hawley was left with a hefty legal bill—over $7,000 in attorney fees. Additionally, he faced another surprise: he had to pay $350 in court costs, even after the charges against him were dismissed.
Unsettled by the situation, Hawley confronted the state trooper outside the courtroom, expressing his anger. “I said, ‘Are you happy now? Did you see what you did, what you cost me?’” Hawley recounted. He also asked the officer if the state would reimburse him for the significant financial and emotional toll. Unfortunately, the response he received was far from empathetic. The trooper reportedly looked at Hawley “like garbage” before walking away.
Hawley’s case isn’t unique. Several other drivers in Tennessee have come forward with similar complaints about state troopers’ conduct during DUI stops. These troubling accounts have raised questions about the fairness of such arrests and the consequences for those wrongly accused.
In an effort to ensure that future encounters with law enforcement are handled properly, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has offered a few helpful tips for drivers during traffic stops. These tips emphasize staying calm, making movements deliberate, and maintaining respect for the officer. For example, drivers should pull over to a safe area away from traffic, turn off the engine, and keep hands visible. Additionally, they should avoid reaching for items such as wallets or registration until instructed by the officer.
This troubling incident serves as a reminder of how one wrong decision can have lasting financial and personal consequences. Hawley’s story has caught the attention of many, and the public is now calling for answers from the Tennessee State Troopers. The U.S. Sun has reached out to the department for a statement, but no comment has been provided at this time.
This case raises important questions about accountability, transparency, and fairness in law enforcement practices. It also sheds light on the often-hidden costs of wrongful arrests that many drivers have to bear. As this story unfolds, it’s clear that more needs to be done to protect citizens from the financial and emotional distress caused by mistakes in the justice system.
