For years, blue states proudly declared themselves as “sanctuary states” for illegal immigrants, boasting of their commitment to welcoming those who cross the border unlawfully. However, it wasn’t until the Biden administration took charge that the reality of this rhetoric began to unfold, as waves of illegal immigrants poured into these states, revealing the true impact of their policies.
Texas, which has borne the brunt of these lax immigration policies, continues to grapple with the overwhelming influx of illegal immigrants. However, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has decided to turn the tables on the very states that championed open borders by sending busloads of these immigrants directly to the sanctuary states. Now, these blue states, previously insulated from the challenges faced by border states, are forced to confront the consequences of their own words.
Massachusetts, one of the most vocal proponents of sanctuary policies, is now realizing the severity of the illegal immigration problem. With immigration courts bogged down by an enormous backlog of over 150,000 cases, the state is struggling to cope with the reality it once dismissed. According to WFTX, the 2024 Fiscal Year is set to reach a record number of deportation cases in Massachusetts, with the number currently standing at 44,000 and expected to climb to 59,000 by the end of the year. This marks a significant increase from the 54,000 deportation cases reported in the 2023 Fiscal Year.
Sarah Sherman-Stokes, a representative of the Immigrants’ Rights & Human Trafficking Program at Boston University School of Law, acknowledged that the state’s deportation efforts are not keeping pace with the overwhelming number of cases. Massachusetts’ inability to manage the surge of illegal immigrants became painfully evident in 2023, when Governor Maura Healey was compelled to call in the National Guard to address what she described as an “emergency.”
“Massachusetts is in a state of emergency, and we need all hands-on deck to meet this moment and ensure families have access to safe shelter and basic services,” Healey declared as she mobilized the National Guard in response to the arrival of 6,000 families seeking refuge in the state.
The Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard, Maj. Gen. Gary W. Keefe, referred to the situation as an “ongoing housing crisis,” underscoring the severity of the challenges faced by the state as it struggled to provide basic services for the influx of immigrants.
But let’s be clear: this crisis is not a housing issue—it is the direct result of the Biden administration’s failed border policies. The administration’s lack of a coherent strategy has led to chaos at the border, and sanctuary states are now feeling the full impact of these disastrous policies. The only viable solution to this problem is deportation.
Governor Abbott’s decision to send illegal immigrants to sanctuary states has exposed the hypocrisy of the left’s immigration stance. For too long, liberals have engaged in moral posturing on the issue of immigration, safe in the knowledge that the real consequences of their policies were far removed from their daily lives. But by bringing the problem to their doorstep, Abbott has forced them to confront the reality that Texans have been dealing with for years.
Massachusetts is now beginning to realize that the conservative stance on border security and strict immigration policies is not so far-fetched after all. The state’s current predicament serves as a stark reminder that the issues facing border states cannot be ignored or dismissed. The push for a border wall and more stringent immigration measures is not about fear-mongering—it is about protecting the nation and ensuring that immigration is managed in a way that is sustainable and fair for all.
In the end, it is clear that the only way to make blue states understand the magnitude of the immigration crisis is to force them to live with the consequences of their own rhetoric. As sanctuary states like Massachusetts struggle to deal with the surge of illegal immigrants, they are learning the hard way that open borders and lax immigration policies are not as compassionate as they once seemed. The lesson is clear: a nation without secure borders is a nation in crisis.
