Former President Donald Trump, once seen as the frontrunner in the 2024 presidential race, has recently been overtaken by Vice President Kamala Harris in several major betting markets. According to data tracked by FOX Business, Harris has now become the favorite to win the White House, signaling a shift in public perception and betting trends.
As of Monday morning, BetUS, a prominent betting platform, gave Harris a 55% implied probability of winning the presidency. This marks the first time since the market opened that the Democratic nominee has taken the lead over Trump. Just over the weekend, the two candidates were neck and neck, reflecting a tight race that has now tilted in Harris’s favor.
On the prediction platform PolyMarket, traders also showed a preference for Harris, giving her a 51% chance of securing victory in the upcoming election. Trump’s odds, on the other hand, dropped to 46%. The trend continued on PredictIt, where Harris has consistently led Trump for several weeks. As of Monday, bettors on PredictIt gave Harris a 59% chance of winning, while Trump’s odds decreased to 43%.
Tim Williams, the director of public relations at BetUS, provided some insights into the sudden surge in Harris’s betting odds. “Not only is Harris now leading in the betting odds, but she is also leading in terms of the total number of wagers placed and total dollar volume bet so far, which is an impressive feat considering she only became the official nominee a week ago,” Williams said in a statement to FOX Business.
Williams expressed surprise at the rapid influx of bets on Harris, noting, “I personally wouldn’t have expected so much money to have been bet on Kamala so quickly, but here we are.” He also pointed out that Harris appears to be attracting larger wagers than Trump, which in the world of sports betting often indicates “sharp money,” or bets placed by more experienced and professional gamblers.
The momentum behind Harris’s candidacy has been building steadily, particularly after President Joe Biden made the unprecedented decision to withdraw from the race last month. Harris’s rise in the betting markets is not just a reflection of betting trends but also mirrors recent polling data that shows her gaining ground against Trump.
A poll released on Wednesday by NPR, PBS, and Marist found that Harris holds a 3-point lead over Trump among registered voters. Another poll from Marquette Law School, released on Thursday, showed Harris with a 4-point advantage over the former president. These polls suggest that Harris’s appeal is growing, and she may have the edge in what is shaping up to be a closely contested race.
The shift in betting odds and polling numbers raises questions about Trump’s ability to maintain his base of support as the 2024 election approaches. While Trump has been a dominant force in Republican politics, the rise of Harris as a formidable challenger indicates that the race for the White House is far from settled.
The 2024 presidential race is evolving rapidly, with Vice President Kamala Harris now emerging as the odds-on favorite to win the election. The betting markets, which often serve as a barometer for public sentiment, are reflecting this shift, and Harris’s growing lead in the polls only adds to her momentum. As the race heats up, it remains to be seen whether Trump can regain his footing or if Harris will continue her ascent toward the presidency.
