Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claims Steak ‘n Shake’s decision to swap out seed oils for beef tallow in its french fries has sparked a wave of praise from customers.
“Steak ‘n Shake just switched out, and people are raving about these french fries,” Kennedy told Fox News host Sean Hannity during an interview at one of the chain’s Florida locations.
Kennedy, biting into a double cheeseburger with a side of fries, described the change as a “completely different experience.” The fast food chain, now frying its potatoes in beef tallow instead of vegetable oil, has seen an enthusiastic response from customers.
“The customers are raving about it,” Kennedy emphasized. “Steak and Shake has been great. We’re very grateful to them for RFKing the french fries.”

Linking Seed Oils to America’s Health Crisis
Kennedy has long voiced concerns over the impact of seed oils on public health. He believes they are a major factor behind the rise in chronic disease.
“Seed oil is one of the components of processed foods, and all the science indicates that ultra-processed foods are the principal culprit in this extraordinary explosion—the epidemic we have of chronic disease,” he said.
Since taking office, Kennedy has been vocal about eliminating what he calls the “childhood chronic disease epidemic.” He sees the recent shift by Steak ‘n Shake as a step in the right direction.
No Ban—Just Incentives
Despite his stance against seed oils, Kennedy reassured that he has no plans to ban them. Instead, he wants to encourage companies to move away from processed ingredients voluntarily.
“I have a libertarian outlook,” he told Hannity. “People should be able to make their own choices. If you want to eat a donut, or seed oils, you should be able to.”
But he insists that Americans should have access to full transparency about what they’re consuming.
“You should be able to exercise informed choice,” he added. “You should know what that product is, what’s in your food, and what the health impacts are. That’s all we’re going to do.”

A Bigger Movement
Kennedy said his efforts align with President Trump’s push for “radical transparency” in the food industry, ensuring consumers know exactly what they’re eating. He also wants more restaurants to follow Steak ‘n Shake’s lead.
“President Trump wants us to have radical transparency and to incentivize companies like [Steak ‘n Shake] to switch to traditional ingredients, like beef tallow,” Kennedy said. “We’re going to inform Americans about what’s been making them sick.”
Several other restaurant chains, including Popeyes, Outback Steakhouse, Sweetgreen, and Buffalo Wild Wings, are either moving away from seed oils or actively considering the change.
“We want to do everything that we can to incentivize these companies to be transparent, to switch over from ultra-processed food, and to be part of this movement to make America healthier,” Kennedy stated.
With major chains considering a switch, Kennedy’s push against seed oils may be gaining traction. Whether other fast-food giants follow suit remains to be seen, but for now, Steak ‘n Shake customers are enjoying their fries—without the seed oils.
