Elon Musk, the high-profile CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has doubled down on his call to take legal action against Dr. Anthony Fauci, former chief medical advisor, intensifying a longstanding clash over Fauci’s pandemic guidance. On Tuesday, Musk made his views clear on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “My pronouns are still prosecute/Fauci” in response to a post by “Insurrection Barbie,” a vocal pro-Trump social media personality.
The original post criticized Fauci’s career in public service, noting his substantial government salary and a yearly pension of $355,000. Additionally, Insurrection Barbie alleged that U.S. taxpayers spent $15 million on Fauci’s security over the past two years, while also suggesting he received significant royalties from vaccine manufacturers. The post stated, “That’s $15 million dollars that nobody asked us if we wanted to fork over to America’s richest bureaucrat.” This notion of Fauci benefiting financially from vaccine rollouts remains controversial and unconfirmed.
Musk has voiced his disapproval of Fauci’s approach to COVID-19 since the early stages of the pandemic. Back in 2020, Musk labeled the widespread alarm over the virus as “dumb,” igniting a heated debate. His criticism continued to build momentum following his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in 2022. Under Musk’s leadership, the platform lifted restrictions on discussions around the origins of COVID-19, a topic central to Musk’s disagreements with Fauci.
Fauci, who retired from his roles at the White House and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the end of 2022, faced growing scrutiny from Republican lawmakers over his role in pandemic management. In June, he appeared before a House panel investigating the virus’s origins. Accusations that Fauci had funded research on dangerous virus strains in Wuhan, where COVID-19 was first identified, prompted rigorous questioning. Representatives suggested that he might have played a part in concealing a potential lab leak.
Responding to these claims, Fauci called them “absolutely false and simply preposterous.” However, Musk remained unswayed by Fauci’s denials. His ongoing support for former President Donald Trump’s re-election bid has only added fuel to the fire. Musk’s alliance with Trump is notable, as Musk reportedly contributed over $100 million to a Trump-supportive political action committee (PAC). He also helped rally voters in swing states by sponsoring a $1 million-a-day sweepstakes to encourage early voting.
Musk’s involvement in Trump’s campaign efforts has opened the door for Musk to potentially influence policy should Trump return to the White House. Trump has indicated interest in Musk’s suggestion to establish a government efficiency commission, where Musk could take on a prominent leadership role. Musk, for his part, claims he could reduce federal spending by at least $2 trillion by slashing unnecessary costs and red tape, particularly in areas that impact his ventures, such as regulatory hurdles surrounding fully autonomous electric vehicles.
Although Fauci has dismissed Musk’s accusations as “insanity,” the billionaire seems unlikely to abandon his campaign. In a previous post, Musk had stated that Fauci “lied to Congress” and was responsible for “research that killed millions of people.” Fauci responded by expressing frustration, wondering, “Prosecute me for what? What are they talking about?” The former chief medical advisor has continuously defended his record, suggesting that Musk’s claims are based on misinterpretations or politically motivated narratives.
As the debate between Musk and Fauci continues to evolve, it highlights a larger conversation in America around public health accountability, government spending, and the right to question authority figures. The public is left watching closely, as Musk’s influence on public discourse and potential future policy could redefine the limits of technology in government, as well as the role of private influence in public affairs.
