Faith has always played a pivotal role in the lives of many Americans, inspiring hope, unity, and storytelling. Among those embracing this spirit is Academy Award-winning director and actor Mel Gibson, who has revealed his plans for a new film exploring the resurrection of Christ.
Speaking with podcaster Joe Rogan, Gibson shared that the journey to create this film has been deeply personal and intellectually challenging. The script, co-written with his brother and screenwriter Randall Wallace, took seven years to complete. Gibson emphasized his belief in the historical authenticity of the gospel, stating, “I regard the gospel as history. It’s a verifiable history… He (Jesus Christ) never existed, but he did. And there are other accounts, verifiable historical accounts outside biblical ones that also bear this up.”
A Groundbreaking Sequel to ‘The Passion of the Christ’
In 2004, Gibson released The Passion of the Christ, a powerful depiction of Christ’s final twelve hours and crucifixion. Despite the controversy it sparked, the film was a monumental success, earning $370 million in the U.S. and over $600 million globally. It secured three Academy Award nominations and remains a cultural milestone in faith-based filmmaking.
Now, Gibson is ready to embark on a more ambitious journey. During his conversation with Rogan, he revealed plans for The Resurrection of the Christ, a film he says will explore the fall of angels, the presence of Satan, and conclude with the death of the last apostle. While he hopes to begin filming in 2026, Gibson also expressed his desire to reunite with Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in The Passion of the Christ.
Faith and Adversity: A Director’s Journey
For Gibson, the road to creating meaningful stories of faith hasn’t been easy. He candidly described the challenges he faced with The Passion of the Christ, from distribution obstacles to Hollywood’s resistance. “There was a lot of opposition to it and I don’t know … I think if you ever hit on that subject matter, you’re going to get people going,” he said.
Despite the hurdles, Gibson remains steadfast in his vision. His personal faith journey, which began with a Catholic upbringing and deepened through intellectual exploration as an adult, informs his creative work. “I came to it through intellect and through reading and putting things together in accounts and then occurrences … in my own life,” Gibson explained.
Spiritual Preparation for a Bold Project
The filmmaker acknowledges the spiritual weight of his upcoming project, admitting that it pushes him to strive for personal growth. “I’m not a great example of Christianity. … I’m flawed and I make a lot of mistakes, but I have to try and be better somehow in order to go in and make that film,” Gibson said.
As he gears up for this ambitious endeavor, Gibson remains grounded in his faith and committed to delivering a story that resonates with audiences worldwide. With its potential to inspire and spark discussion, The Resurrection of the Christ promises to be another milestone in his storied career.
