A California high school teacher has ignited widespread controversy after an unconventional class activity led to outrage among parents and students alike. The teacher, from Rancho Buena Vista High School, reportedly instructed students to role-play as gay or lesbian individuals during a diversity and inclusion exercise.
Unanticipated Assignment
The activity, conducted as part of a freshman elective seminar aimed at fostering social awareness, took a shocking turn when students were told to participate in a “coming out” simulation. The instructions read:
“Stand in a circle. Each of you is now gay or lesbian, and you are about to begin your coming out process. You cannot talk for the rest of this activity.”
For some, the exercise crossed a line. Seven students reportedly walked out of the classroom, citing discomfort. James Leon, whose daughter was among those who refused to participate, expressed his dismay:
“Very uncomfortable,” Leon told NBC San Diego. “She told me right away when she got home. She said, ‘Dad, you have to hear this.'”

Leon took to Instagram to share the controversial assignment, along with a photo of the instructions. His caption reflected the frustration shared by many parents:
“These are the types of activities being put on our children in public schools. My daughter told the teacher, ‘Hell no!’ and walked out.”
