In a recent bust at Washington Dulles International Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted 28 pounds of cocaine hidden in a shipment of hot chocolate. The illicit drugs, with a street value of around $900,000, were en route to a destination in Northern Virginia when they were discovered, according to Patch.
The cocaine was cleverly concealed within packets of hot chocolate mix. CBP officers discovered ten packets of the drug during routine inspection procedures. The shipment had arrived from Guatemala, a country known to be a hub for drug trafficking. Upon opening the packages, officers found the cocaine hidden between layers of coffee grounds and underneath a double layer of chocolate bars inside the hot chocolate packets.
A press release from CBP stated that the substance was tested on-site using a handheld isotope analysis tool, which confirmed it as cocaine hydrochloride. “CBP officers initially discovered 10 bricks of a white powdery substance concealed between layers of coffee grounds and under a double layer of chocolate bars in hot chocolate packages. Officers tested the white powdery substance using a handheld elemental isotope analysis tool and identified the substance as cocaine hydrochloride,” the release explained.
Federal authorities acted swiftly, seizing the drugs and detaining the individual responsible for the shipment. On October 5, 2024, the courier was apprehended, but despite being held in custody for a period, he was released on November 12, 2024. The delay in connecting the man directly to the cocaine meant that authorities could not hold him longer. However, his visa was canceled, and he was allowed to board a flight back to Guatemala, leaving Virginia on Wednesday.
Marc E. Calixte, the CBP’s area port director for Washington, D.C., emphasized the relentless nature of the agency’s work in stopping illegal drug shipments. In a statement, he said, “Drug trafficking organizations continue trying to smuggle their illicit narcotics into the United States, but vigilant Customs and Border Protection officers are relentless in their efforts to intercept these smuggling attempts and to protect our communities from the scourge of dangerous drugs.”
This interception is part of the ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to curb the influx of illegal narcotics into the country. In 2023, CBP officers and agents seized approximately 2,339 pounds of dangerous drugs across various U.S. ports of entry. The department continues its commitment to combatting drug smuggling through vigilance and sophisticated detection techniques.
This case highlights the ingenuity of drug traffickers in attempting to hide narcotics in everyday shipments, as well as the determination of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in stopping these illegal operations before they reach American streets. The interception not only prevented a significant quantity of drugs from entering the community but also disrupted a larger network of trafficking organizations.
As the battle against drug smuggling intensifies, CBP’s dedication to protecting U.S. borders remains unwavering. Through technology, teamwork, and an eye for detail, authorities continue to make critical seizures that help keep dangerous substances out of the hands of those who would misuse them.
