In a daring but ultimately disastrous move, a man was caught attempting to toss a stash of drugs worth $25,000 over the walls of a UK prison. The shocking incident was captured on CCTV, exposing the brazen act of Hubert Berus, a 23-year-old who tried multiple times to breach the secure perimeter of HMP Peterborough.
Berus was seen on several occasions running up to the prison walls with a package, determined to deliver it despite the high security. The package, which contained Class A drugs, was recovered and later confirmed to have Berus’ DNA on it, further sealing his involvement in the illegal activity.
The alarm was raised when a prison custody officer noticed suspicious movements near the prison walls. The officer spotted Berus and two others hastily fleeing to a nearby skatepark, where they stashed something under a ramp. Upon inspection, the officers recovered a package containing drugs valued at $25,000 within the prison’s economy.
Further investigations revealed that this wasn’t Berus’ first attempt. A similar package, containing about $2,600 worth of cannabis and tobacco, had been found in the sterile zone between the prison wall and the exercise yard earlier in the year. That package also linked back to Berus through forensic analysis of his DNA.
When Berus was arrested in March 2021 on an unrelated charge, a search of his mobile phone revealed bragging messages in which he boasted about throwing drugs into the prison. He even admitted that his initial attempt failed when the package bounced off the wall, forcing him to try again. This incident had also been captured on CCTV, leaving little doubt about his involvement.
Berus’ bold efforts to smuggle drugs into the prison led to his eventual capture by plain-clothed officers in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, on October 21, 2021. Following his arrest, he appeared in Peterborough Crown Court on October 4, where he faced multiple charges related to the supply of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis.
In addition to the drug charges, Berus also pleaded guilty to a separate offense of affray, which involved him and an accomplice, 20-year-old Kevinas Lazauskas, in a violent incident in Eastfield, Peterborough. Police were called to the scene after receiving a 999 call from a frightened man who reported that masked men were outside his home, threatening to harm his cousin. Both Berus and Lazauskas were involved in the confrontation, further complicating Berus’ legal troubles.
As a result of his actions, Berus was sentenced to three years and two months in prison. His sentence reflected not only his involvement in the supply of drugs but also the affray incident that unfolded in October 2023. Lazauskas, his accomplice, was sentenced to one year and 11 months in prison after admitting to affray, drug possession with intent to supply, and breaching a suspended sentence for previous drug offenses.
Detective Constable Jacob Reeves, who played a key role in the investigation, emphasized the importance of Berus’ conviction, stating, “Not only does this case show our commitment to tackling drug dealing in our county, but also the seriousness of prohibited items going into our prisons. This will absolutely not be tolerated.”
The complex investigation into Berus’ criminal activities took months of work, but his eventual confession and the mounting evidence ensured that justice was served. For his role in the attempted drug smuggling and his part in a violent altercation, Berus will now be spending significant time behind bars, while authorities continue their efforts to crack down on drug-related crimes both on the streets and within the prison system.
