Social media has been buzzing with warnings about Fabuloso, the popular cleaning product, claiming it contains harmful bacteria and has been recalled. However, these posts are recycling information from nearly two years ago, causing unnecessary alarm.
In December 2024, users on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and X began sharing posts with titles like, “NEWS: Fabuloso, a popular cleaning product, contains the bacteria Pseudomonas.” These posts referenced an alleged recall of over 4 million bottles due to contamination with dangerous bacteria. Despite the viral nature of these claims, the recall in question actually dates back to early 2023.
The Original Recall in 2023
Fabuloso and its parent company, Colgate-Palmolive, issued a recall on February 8, 2023. The recall involved approximately 4.9 million bottles sold in the U.S. and 56,000 in Canada. The issue stemmed from a preservative that was not added at sufficient levels during manufacturing, increasing the risk of bacteria growth.
According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the affected products were contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, bacteria commonly found in soil and water.
The CPSC warned that these bacteria could pose a serious threat to individuals with weakened immune systems, underlying lung conditions, or external medical devices. Exposure through inhalation, skin contact, or the eyes could lead to infections requiring medical attention. However, the agency noted that healthy individuals are generally unaffected.

Despite being resolved nearly two years ago, the recall resurfaced in late 2024, leading to confusion and misplaced concern. A search of the CPSC website and Fabuloso’s official site confirms no additional recalls have been issued for Fabuloso products since February 2023.
The viral posts lack context, failing to clarify that this information is outdated. The dramatic headlines and alarming claims have reignited fear among consumers, but the situation remains unchanged since 2023.
What Should Consumers Do?
While there’s no active recall on Fabuloso products in 2024, it’s wise to check any older bottles of the cleaner you might still have. The company has provided a detailed list of affected products and manufacturing codes on its website to help customers identify if their products were part of the 2023 recall.
Fabuloso addressed the situation at the time, stating, “A preservative was not added at the intended levels during manufacturing. With inadequate preservative, there is a risk of bacteria growth in the recalled products.”
If you own Fabuloso products from late 2022 or early 2023, it’s worth cross-referencing the manufacturing codes to ensure they are safe to use.
Stay Informed, Avoid Panic
This situation highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it online. While social media is a powerful tool for raising awareness, outdated or incomplete information can quickly lead to unnecessary panic.
As of now, there is no new recall on Fabuloso products. However, staying informed and proactive is always a good practice, especially when it comes to household products that directly impact your health and safety.
