Egg prices have seen a sharp decline, dropping nearly $2 per dozen, after the Trump administration rolled out its biosafety strategy to combat the H5N1 bird flu, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced Tuesday morning. The virus has wreaked havoc on the poultry industry in recent months, leading to skyrocketing costs for consumers.
Last month, Rollins revealed that the Department of Agriculture would allocate $1 billion to bring down egg prices and control the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza. The plan is aggressive, involving potential imports of up to 100 million eggs from foreign suppliers, financial support for farm biosecurity measures, and continued research into poultry vaccines.
“We’re more focused on how we bring the price of eggs down and the avian bird flu for everyone,” Rollins told reporters. “A good piece of news we just got in the last day or two is that the average cost of a dozen eggs has gone down $1.85 since we announced our plan about a week and a half ago.”
The impact is already visible. As of Tuesday, the average cost of a dozen large white eggs stood at $6.08, a significant drop from the $8 peak earlier this month. On Inauguration Day, prices hovered around $6.27, according to USDA data.
The bird flu outbreak has devastated the poultry sector, forcing farmers to cull approximately 160 million chickens in an attempt to contain the virus. This massive loss drove egg prices up by 53% since January 2024, with a 14% spike between December and January alone, compounding an earlier 8% rise from November.
Despite the recent relief in prices, Rollins cautioned that seasonal trends could temporarily push costs higher as Easter approaches.
“This is always the highest price for eggs,” she noted, reminding consumers that demand traditionally surges in March and April.
While prices have started to stabilize, the long-term outlook remains uncertain. The administration’s strategy will continue to evolve as officials monitor the situation, ensuring both affordability for consumers and sustainability for poultry farmers.
