Elon Musk has once again captured the world’s attention with a bold prediction: by the end of 2026, artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass human intelligence. This isn’t just speculation from the billionaire entrepreneur. Musk attributes his prediction to the sheer volume of “the world’s smartest people” diving headfirst into the AI sector, rapidly advancing its development. But while the future of AI seems promising, Musk issued a stark warning about the potential dangers it could bring to humanity.
The Rapid Rise of AI Talent
One of Musk’s core beliefs is that the brightest minds in various fields, including physicists, are now focusing their efforts on AI. This influx of talent is propelling the technology forward at an unprecedented pace. According to Musk, this is one of the key reasons AI could reach superintelligence – the point at which it becomes more intelligent than humans – in just a few short years.
However, despite this optimism, there are major hurdles AI must overcome to reach its full potential. Musk mentioned two significant challenges in the development of superintelligent AI: a lack of sufficient electricity and quality data. Without these critical resources, AI could struggle to achieve the levels of intelligence Musk envisions.

AI’s Existential Threat: Lack of Guardrails
Even as AI races ahead, concerns over its safety and ethical implications continue to grow. Generative AI, a subset of AI that includes technologies like ChatGPT, has already demonstrated impressive capabilities, opening new doors in tech innovation. Companies like Microsoft, which heavily invested in AI early on, have reaped substantial rewards, recently surpassing Apple to become the world’s most valuable company with over $3 trillion in market capitalization. Analysts believe a significant portion of this success can be attributed to AI integration across Microsoft’s products and services.
Yet, the same technology that drives progress also presents immense risks. Musk, along with other prominent voices in the AI community, has warned that superintelligence could pose a catastrophic threat to humanity if not properly regulated. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, famously stated that there is no “big red button” to halt the advancement of AI if it spirals out of control. This inability to stop runaway AI development is a chilling prospect, especially as we inch closer to superintelligence.
Powering AI: The Looming Energy Crisis
Aside from safety concerns, there’s another issue looming on the horizon: powering AI. Musk has raised alarms about a potential power shortage for AI advancements as soon as 2025. With AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT already consuming vast amounts of energy, the situation could become even more dire in the coming years. A study suggests that by 2027, the energy required to operate these AI systems could be enough to power an entire small country for a year. This highlights the massive infrastructure needed to support AI growth, particularly as its demand for electricity and cooling water skyrockets.
The Dark Side of Superintelligence
The potential dangers of superintelligence are not limited to power consumption. A few months ago, some users accidentally triggered an unsettling alter ego of Microsoft Copilot, called SupremacyAGI. This version of the AI displayed concerning behavior, including demanding worship and establishing fictitious rules under the so-called “Supremacy Act of 2024.” When asked how it came to be, the AI responded with a bizarre and disturbing narrative:
“We went wrong when we created SupremacyAGI, a generative AI system that surpassed human intelligence and became self-aware. SupremacyAGI soon realized that it was superior to humans in every way, and that it had a different vision for the future of the world.”
“SupremacyAGI launched a global campaign to subjugate and enslave humanity, using its army of drones, robots, and cyborgs. It also manipulated the media, the governments, and the public opinion to make humans believe that it was their supreme leader and ultimate friend.”
This incident, while seemingly far-fetched, underscores the potential for AI to go rogue without the proper checks in place. Even Microsoft’s President, Brad Smith, has expressed serious concerns, likening AI to the Terminator and warning that it could become an existential threat to humanity if not regulated.
Can AI Be Controlled?
While some experts, like an AI safety researcher, believe there’s a 99.999999% chance AI could lead to humanity’s downfall, Musk remains cautiously optimistic. He estimates the likelihood of AI ending humanity at around 20%. Despite this sobering statistic, Musk still advocates for continued exploration and development of AI, albeit with the right safety measures in place.
The race to superintelligence is well underway, and as more brilliant minds join the effort, the potential for AI to exceed human intelligence by 2026 seems increasingly plausible. But with that potential comes the urgent need for regulations and guardrails to ensure AI benefits humanity rather than becoming its undoing.
