A former high school volleyball player who suffered devastating injuries after facing off against a transgender opponent received a special honor from former President Donald Trump. During his fiery congressional address, Trump highlighted Payton McNabb’s story, sparking a wave of applause from Republicans—while Democrats sat silent in protest.
McNabb, who sustained a severe concussion and partial paralysis from the impact of a spike by a trans athlete in 2022, was visibly emotional as Trump acknowledged her ordeal. The former president didn’t hold back, condemning policies that allow biological males to compete in women’s sports.
“When her girls’ volleyball match was invaded by a male, he smashed the ball so hard in Payton’s face, causing a traumatic brain injury, partially paralyzing her right side and ending her athletic career,” Trump declared.

For McNabb, the moment was surreal.
“What an incredible honor. I was just so honored to even be there as a guest of the president and first lady, that’s just unreal – such a surreal moment I’ll never forget,” she told The Post.
Even two years later, the 19-year-old still struggles with lingering cognitive issues and relentless headaches. Despite the hardships, she has channeled her pain into advocacy, becoming a leading voice in the fight for fair competition in women’s sports.
The reaction from congressional Democrats, however, was telling. As Republicans erupted in cheers, their counterparts remained frozen, refusing to acknowledge McNabb’s presence.
From her seat, McNabb could see their cold, indifferent expressions.
“I think that was the best speech he’s ever given, it was so pro-American and you could really feel it on one side. The Democrats were really unprofessional and embarrassing yesterday in their actions,” she remarked.
McNabb’s moment in the spotlight came on the heels of a major legislative battle. Just a day before Trump’s address, congressional Democrats blocked the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. The bill, which sought to reinforce Title IX protections by defining eligibility based on biological sex, was shot down along strict party lines.
The irony of it all wasn’t lost on McNabb.
“I think it was so ironic that last night all of the Democrats came together and wore pink and claimed they’re the party of women, and literally the day before none of them voted to protect women and girls,” she said.
Their actions, she argued, expose their true priorities.
“They really showed their hands last night. They can’t get over it – 80% of the country agrees on this and they’re willing to die on this hill. It was really disappointing seeing none of them take a stand for women, because some of them have daughters, and if they don’t they know at least one woman in their lives and voted against them.”
“The Democratic party has failed women.”

McNabb’s story has reignited the debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports, an issue that continues to divide the nation. While supporters of inclusion argue for equality, critics, including McNabb, warn of the physical dangers and unfair competition that biological males present in female athletics.
As the political battle rages on, McNabb remains resolute, using her platform to demand change and ensure that no other female athlete endures what she did. Her voice, amplified by Trump’s recognition, has become impossible to ignore.
