A well-known extreme eater and TikTok personality, Efecan Kultur, has died at the age of 24 after battling severe health issues. The social media star, famous for devouring massive amounts of food on camera, struggled to breathe and stand in his final days.
Kultur had gained a significant following on TikTok, amassing over 155,000 fans who watched him take on excessive eating challenges. His content, part of the widely popular “mukbang” trend, showcased him consuming large portions of food while chatting with his audience.

The Rise of Mukbang
Mukbang, a global internet craze, involves people recording and live-streaming themselves eating oversized meals. Originating in South Korea in 2009, the term merges the Korean words mugneun (eating) and bangsong (broadcast).
The trend has exploded in popularity, with more than 4.9 million mukbang videos on YouTube and 4.1 million on TikTok. Celebrities such as Florence Pugh, Kylie Jenner, and Megan Thee Stallion have helped bring mainstream attention to the phenomenon.
However, the trend carries serious risks. At least two mukbang influencers died last year from health complications related to excessive eating, while many others have suffered from obesity, overeating disorders, and other health crises.
Kultur’s Health Decline
Kultur’s health began deteriorating months before his death. In December 2024, he was hospitalized due to severe weight-related complications. He could no longer stand and had difficulty breathing. His body developed frequent bruising, which led to mobility issues.
His condition worsened, forcing him to remain bedridden and reliant on a breathing machine. The illness left him unable to visit his mother’s grave, who had passed away a year earlier. Doctors eventually discharged him for home care, where he later died.
A funeral was held at Celaliye Mosque in Istanbul, and Kultur was laid to rest in Silivri Gumusyaka Cemetery.
The Dangers of Extreme Eating
Kultur’s passing highlights the darker side of the mukbang industry. Last July, another extreme eater, Pan Xiaoting, died after a catastrophic health failure. During a live-streamed, 10-hour eating challenge, her stomach tore, leading to a fatal internal rupture.
A post-mortem report revealed that Xiaoting’s stomach was stretched beyond capacity and filled with undigested food. The rupture caused stomach acid and food to spill into her abdomen, resulting in her death.

The rise of mukbang has sparked concerns among health professionals, who warn about its influence on eating habits and long-term health risks. While the trend continues to attract millions of viewers, Kultur’s tragic fate serves as a grim reminder of the physical toll extreme eating can take.
