Elon Musk is once again pushing for the United States to walk away from NATO, adding fuel to the growing tensions between Washington and its European allies.
The Tesla CEO and unofficial leader of the White House DOGE office reshared a post on X that simply read: “Exit NATO now!”
“We really should,” Musk replied. “Doesn’t make sense for America to pay for the defense of Europe.”
This is not the first time Musk has made such a statement. On March 1, he called for the U.S. to leave NATO, further aligning himself with voices skeptical of America’s financial commitments to the alliance.
The friction between the U.S. and its European NATO partners has intensified under the current administration. Former President Donald Trump has long criticized Europe’s defense spending, calling on NATO members to contribute more. He has demanded that European nations raise their defense budgets to 5% of GDP—far beyond what any country, including the U.S., currently spends.
During his first term, Trump threatened to pull the U.S. out of NATO if allies failed to meet their financial obligations. While some countries have since pledged to increase spending, Trump has remained unconvinced. Earlier this month, he stated that the U.S. would not defend NATO members who did not pay enough for their own security.
This comes at a critical moment for Europe, which is working to reinforce support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, the U.S. appears to be stepping back. Trump recently halted military aid to Kyiv after a tense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Musk has become an increasingly influential figure in the Trump administration. Through DOGE, he has pushed for mass layoffs of federal employees and the cancellation of government contracts, all in an effort to slash federal spending.
As debates over NATO’s future and America’s role in global defense intensify, Musk’s comments add another layer to the ongoing conversation about U.S. foreign policy and military alliances.
