Texas is tightening its grip on illegal immigration. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has officially granted the Texas National Guard broader authority in El Paso. They now have the power to apprehend and detain illegal immigrants—a significant escalation in border enforcement.
Governor Greg Abbott made the announcement on X, stating:
“In an agreement I signed between Texas and Trump’s Customs and Border Protection, the Texas National Guard is granted the power of immigration officials to make immigration arrests.
Effective immediately.
This boosts manpower for border security.”

This decision strengthens Operation Lone Star, an initiative launched to curb illegal immigration. According to a press release, approximately 5,000 Texas National Guard soldiers are currently deployed under the operation. An additional 1,500 soldiers from other states have been sent to reinforce Texas.
Abbott has been rallying national support for years. Two years ago, he called on all governors to send reinforcements to the border. Republican-led states answered, dispatching National Guard units, law enforcement officers, and equipment.
El Paso Sector Interim Chief Walter N. Slosar praised the move in a press release:
“The brave men and women of the National Guard raised their hands today and swore an oath to defend this nation’s borders. They now stand alongside our Border Patrol Agents to enforce U.S. immigration laws and secure the border. Together, they secure our borders with the strength and commitment the American people deserve. We are proud to serve beside them in this mission.”
Texas is ramping up its border defenses as illegal crossings continue to be a national flashpoint. With more boots on the ground and stronger legal backing, state officials hope to gain control where the federal government has faltered.
The Border Patrol urges citizens to report any suspicious activity anonymously at 1-800-635-2509.
