Ludacris, the well-known rapper from Atlanta, recently sparked concern after he posted a video of himself drinking glacier water during a visit to Alaska. Fans quickly raised alarms about the potential dangers of consuming unfiltered water, which could contain harmful bacteria, parasites, or viruses.
On Monday, Christopher Bridges, better known by his stage name Ludacris, shared an Instagram video showing him sampling water from a glacier in Alaska. In the video, the 46-year-old star of the “Fast & Furious” franchise can be seen standing by a lake formed by the melting glacier, preparing to take a sip of the pristine-looking water.
“Half the world’s glaciers are here in Alaska,” Ludacris told his followers, explaining that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to check this off his “bucket list,” or as he jokingly called it, his “f**k it list.”
As he approached the water’s edge, Ludacris admitted, “I’ve never tasted fresh glacial water in my life – this is a first.” With that, he dipped a thermos into the clear water, filled it up, and took a long drink. Clearly pleased, he exclaimed, “Oh, my God!” before running back from the edge of the glacier.
He captioned the post, “Water So Good It Tastes Like GOD Made It. Well, Because He Did.”
Fans reacted swiftly in the comment section. One remarked, “That was ludicrous.” Another warned, “Bro gon discover some ancient disease.” Others chimed in with concerns about the safety of drinking untreated glacier water, with one person writing, “Be careful with glacier water!” and another jokingly referencing the “Alien” movie franchise, “The chest-burster is coming.”
Despite the warnings, Ludacris remained unfazed. Later that day, he responded to fans’ concerns in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “Yo, for everybody asking me how that glacier water really tasted – and when I tell y’all I’m a water snob – it was the best tasting water I’ve ever had in my life.”
Even though Ludacris was thrilled by the taste of the glacier water, experts advise against drinking water from natural sources without proper filtration. According to the National Parks Service (NPS), even seemingly clean water from streams, rivers, or lakes can be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause diseases like cryptosporidiosis or giardiasis. The NPS website stresses the importance of purifying natural water sources before drinking.
A 2018 article from Outside Magazine, updated in 2022, highlighted another potential hazard: human fecal matter. The article cited research by Michael Loso, a geologist with the National Parks Service, who studied the presence of human waste in glacier water. His research found that fecal bacteria could survive indefinitely when buried in ice, posing an additional risk to those drinking directly from glacial sources.
In his Instagram post, Ludacris seemed to brush off the warnings, stating, “As I drank it, it felt like every cell in my human body was being hydrated and rejuvenated at the same damn time.” His playful response continued in the comments, with one fan joking, “Reporting live from the bathroom lol,” and another suggesting, “Ok we need another update in 48 hours.”
Beyond this recent adventure, Ludacris has had a long and successful career in both music and film. He first gained fame in the early 2000s with hit songs like “Rollout (My Business),” “Move B***h,” and “Stand Up.” His debut album, “Back For the First Time,” was released in October 2000, setting the stage for his rise in the hip-hop world.
Aside from his music career, Ludacris has also made a name for himself in Hollywood. He first appeared in “2 Fast 2 Furious” in 2003 and has since become a staple in the “Fast & Furious” franchise. He’s also appeared in films like “Crash,” “Hustle & Flow,” and “John Henry.”
With an estimated net worth of $40 million and a collection of accolades including three Grammy Awards and a Screen Actors’ Guild Award, Ludacris continues to be a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. Despite the concerns raised by fans, it seems he’s willing to take risks to keep life interesting.
