For many, pets are more than just animals—they’re family. Yet, not everyone seems to share this sentiment. In a shocking case, an Indiana man made the unthinkable decision to euthanize his two healthy dogs because they no longer fit into his life.
Loyal Companions of 10 Years
Cosmo, a Labrador Retriever mix, and Sam, a Pointer, had been by their owner’s side for nearly a decade. The pair was inseparable—senior dogs who had built a lifetime of memories with the man they trusted. However, their loyalty was repaid with betrayal when their owner decided they were no longer convenient.
The reason? His girlfriend was allergic to dogs, and the man deemed Cosmo and Sam’s lives expendable. Rather than rehome them or take them to a shelter, he opted for what’s known as “convenience euthanasia,” a term used when pets are euthanized simply because they no longer suit their owner’s lifestyle.
A Shocking Request Denied
When the man brought Cosmo and Sam to a local veterinary clinic, he asked for them to be euthanized. Despite the request, the veterinarian refused, recognizing that the dogs were perfectly healthy and full of life.
“None of us want to end a pet’s life unless it is to prevent suffering,” the vet explained, firmly rejecting the man’s cruel demand. Instead, the clinic reached out to Begin Again Rescue Co. (BARC), a nonprofit organization in Valparaiso, Indiana, that specializes in helping dogs in dire situations.
Recovery From Heartbreak
Cosmo and Sam were handed over to BARC, where volunteers worked tirelessly to help the dogs recover from the trauma of abandonment. The pair initially struggled—they stopped eating and seemed deeply affected by the loss of their home and owner. Over time, with plenty of care and attention, they began to eat, play, and show their true personalities again.
Finding a new home for the duo was no easy feat. Senior dogs, particularly bonded pairs, are notoriously difficult to place. Yet the volunteers at BARC remained determined to ensure Cosmo and Sam’s story had a happy ending.
A Second Chance at Happiness
Months passed with no luck in finding a forever home. Eventually, Cosmo and Sam were sent to P.A.W.S. Tinley Park, a no-kill shelter in Illinois that offered to help. Against the odds, the perfect match came quickly.
Eric and Tiffany Dybas, a couple grieving the loss of their own dog, heard about Cosmo and Sam’s story and felt an immediate connection. Without hesitation, they welcomed the dogs into their lives.
“Thanks to our friends at P.A.W.S. Tinley Park, Sam and Cosmo are laying on a comfy couch tonight! They were so good when they visited Santa and now their Christmas wish came true! They have a home!,” BARC shared in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Living Their Best Lives
Today, Cosmo and Sam are thriving in their new home. Eric and Tiffany are showering the dogs with love and attention, ensuring their golden years are filled with comfort and happiness.
Their story is a reminder of the resilience of animals and the kindness of those who step in to make a difference. Cosmo and Sam’s journey from betrayal to a loving home is a testament to the power of compassion, even in the face of cruelty.
A Cruel Reality
While Cosmo and Sam’s story had a happy ending, it highlights a harsh reality for many pets. Convenience euthanasia continues to be a troubling practice, sparking conversations about the responsibilities of pet ownership. These animals depend on us to care for them, and stories like this serve as a wake-up call to ensure their welfare is never an afterthought.
