Every morning since February 2021, John Flores, 63, begins his day the same way: sitting quietly by his late wife Cheryl’s grave, coffee in hand. His steadfast visits aren’t just a routine—they’re a declaration of enduring love.
For nearly three years, John has made it his mission to care for Cheryl’s resting place in a way he feels no one else could. He trims the grass, lays fresh flowers, and decorates the site for every holiday. “He stayed there. He didn’t want to leave her,” says Brandy, John’s daughter. “He planned the most beautiful funeral for her—she had the best of everything. He wanted it perfect for her.”
This ritual has become John’s way of preserving Cheryl’s memory and keeping her close. Despite battling small cell lung cancer since 2014, he remains unwavering in his devotion. His doctors gave him a grim prognosis of three months when he was first diagnosed. Yet, through years of treatments, Cheryl was his rock. “She went to every appointment, every chemo session, every PET scan,” recalls Brandy. “It was her that kept him fighting.”
John’s loyalty to Cheryl extends beyond her life. He’s kept up his daily visits even as his own health falters. When Brandy joined him at the cemetery one October morning, she decided to film her father tending the grave. The simple, heartfelt video found an audience of millions on TikTok. “I told him he went viral. He smiled,” she shares. “He wanted Cheryl’s story to be told.”
For John, these visits aren’t about grief alone—they’re a way to celebrate the bond they shared. “Their love was unlike anything else,” Brandy says. “It was a love like you read about in books.” Married for 30 years, they navigated the challenges of blending their families seamlessly. Cheryl had three children, John had three, and together they had one more.
Cheryl’s passing came after a fierce battle with COVID-19. John, known for his strength, broke down as doctors prepared to place her on a ventilator. “I never saw my strong daddy cry,” Brandy recalls. “Not even during his cancer. But that day, he broke down like a baby.” Despite her weakening body, Cheryl reassured him: “Bear, just let them do it. I’ll be okay. I’ll get better. I’ll see you again.”
That memory lingers with John, who cherishes the love they built together. It’s what fuels his dedication to visiting her every day. Some critics have questioned whether such devotion is healthy, but Brandy dismisses them. “He knows this,” she explains. “But he’s doing what he can to keep her memory alive and show his love for her.”

Looking ahead, Brandy hopes her father continues to find peace in his rituals. She and her siblings are considering placing a bench by Cheryl’s grave so John can enjoy his coffee in comfort. “I know he will never be whole again,” she says. “But with what time he has left, I just want him to do what makes him happy.”
For John, life without Cheryl will never feel complete. But his daily visits are proof that their love lives on, etched in every flower he lays and every blade of grass he trims. “Our family will never be complete again—we know this,” Brandy says. “But it also doesn’t work without him.”
