How Did They Do It? Florida Inmates Share a Baby Without Ever Touching!

When determination meets creativity, even the most challenging circumstances can pave the way to something extraordinary. Such is the case with two inmates who defied physical barriers to fulfill their dream of becoming parents, despite never meeting face-to-face.

Daisy Link and Joan Depaz, both convicted of serious crimes—first and second-degree murder, respectively—remain incarcerated with no hope of freedom anytime soon. Yet, even the walls of a high-security prison couldn’t extinguish their dreams of parenthood. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” indeed.

In a tale that seems almost too bizarre to believe, Link and Depaz discovered an unusual connection through the air vents of their prison cells. With only an L-shaped duct separating them, the two began to converse on lonely nights, finding solace in each other’s voices. Over time, their bond deepened, and one fateful conversation led to the idea of having a child together.

Link shared with WSVN the lengths they went to achieve what seemed impossible. “Because the vents is like a L-shape, really. It drops right into my vent, from her room, she could throw a pen into the vent and it’ll land right into my vent,” Depaz explained. This unconventional “delivery system” became the cornerstone of their plan.

Using rolled-up paper and an astounding level of determination, Depaz would transfer his semen to Link. According to him, this happened up to five times a day. Link then used yeast infection applicators to administer the material. The process was anything but conventional, but it worked.

Their ingenuity and persistence paid off. Against all odds, the couple succeeded in creating life. DNA tests later confirmed that Depaz was the father of the child, validating their improbable story.

Dr. Akerman of the Fertility Centre of Miami weighed in on the rare occurrence. “We estimate that probably their chances were less than five percent, but that is not to say that the chances were zero. So this is absolutely a case that is exceedingly unusual. To my knowledge, I’ve never heard or read anything like this.”

It’s a testament to the couple’s resourcefulness that they succeeded where science would have given them little hope.

The baby, born into a world far removed from the confines of a prison cell, now lives with Depaz’s mother. While the child is likely to grow up unaware of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding their birth, their story stands as a testament to the lengths people will go to fulfill their dreams.

For Link and Depaz, parenthood symbolizes hope—a rare light in their otherwise dark reality. Although they may never have the chance to raise their child themselves, they’ve created a bond that transcends prison walls and redefines the limits of human connection.

In the end, this bizarre and improbable tale proves one thing: love and determination know no boundaries—even the iron bars of a prison.
