A Texas woman has been arrested after leaving her 16-month-old child alone to travel out of state, allegedly to meet a man she met on a dating app. Reese Louise Myers, 25, now faces a charge of child abandonment or endangerment, according to the Killeen Police Department.
The incident took place during the summer, but it wasn’t until earlier this month that Myers was apprehended in Southern California. She was arrested in Barstow, about 1,300 miles away from her home in Killeen, Texas, on a fugitive warrant. Myers was brought back to Texas this week to face charges.
The alarming situation began on July 28, when police received a call regarding a child’s welfare at an apartment on West Hallmark Avenue in Killeen, a city located about 70 miles north of Austin. Officers discovered the child in a distressing situation. “Officers were told that a child was hanging out near a broken window and an aggressive dog was trying to attack the child,” the Killeen Police Department reported. “Upon the officers’ arrival, they observed a child protruding from the window that was repaired with a plexiglass sheeting and cardboard. It was not shattered.”
Inside the apartment, the officers found the toddler alone, wearing only a T-shirt, with visible signs of neglect, including diaper rash and feces on their skin. The apartment itself was also concerning. “Officers conducted a sweep of the apartment and it showed the child was alone, with the exception of two dogs,” the police account continued. “Officers contacted the mother of the child, who advised that she was currently in San Antonio and had been there since the day before.”
San Antonio, located about 160 miles south of Killeen, was where Myers claimed to have gone to visit a man she met on the dating app Hinge. According to the arrest affidavit, she told police she had left her child with a babysitter she met on Facebook. However, when officers followed up with this alleged babysitter, they found no recent communication between the two women.
“The babysitter advised she had previously babysat for the suspect last year in December and hadn’t spoken to her since,” the police report states. The lack of recent contact raised suspicions about Myers’ story. Further investigation revealed that the apartment was arranged in a way that suggested Myers had planned to leave her child alone. Doors were secured, a baby gate was placed in front of the kitchen, and all windows were locked, except for the one the child was seen hanging from.
When police contacted Myers, they instructed her to return to Killeen. However, she did not comply. Instead, she was arrested on November 5 in California by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office. Arrest records show that Myers was taken into custody on the Fort Irwin Army Base, about 1,365 miles away from Killeen. After being released in California, she was transported back to Texas by Killeen authorities.
The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment and placed in the custody of Child Protective Services. This case serves as a disturbing reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of young children, especially when their guardians make reckless decisions.
