Richard Gere has sold his storied Connecticut home, marking the next chapter for the celebrated actor. Gere, once named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1999, decided to let go of his sprawling New Canaan estate to embrace a new adventure across the Atlantic, aiming to be closer to the roots and family of his wife, Alejandra Silva.
Gere bought the 1938-built property from iconic singer-songwriter duo Paul Simon and Edie Brickell for $10.8 million in 2022. The estate, brimming with historic charm and sprawling over 32 lush acres, features six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a pool, several gardens, and a quaint three-bedroom guest cottage. According to Sotheby’s, the residence boasts “period details” throughout, capturing the era’s elegance while being designed to meet contemporary needs.
Despite its grandeur, Gere recently chose to part with the estate, selling it for $10.75 million. Although a slight decrease from the purchase price, Gere’s decision to sell was motivated by family priorities rather than financial gain. In a revealing April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Gere expressed his desire to shift his life closer to Silva’s roots in Spain, where they plan to immerse their children in her culture.
“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” Gere said of his wife. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”
The move is an opportunity for Gere and Silva to enjoy life in Spain’s capital, Madrid, where they will embark on what Gere calls a “great adventure.” With their young sons, Alexander, 5, and James, 4, joining them, the family looks forward to making new memories abroad. Gere, now 75, also has a grown son, Homer, from his previous marriage, while Silva shares her older son, Albert, with her ex-husband, Govind Friedland.
Reflecting on his affection for his wife’s homeland, Gere shared, “I love Spain and the ability of the Spanish people to live transmitting joy and happiness.” It’s clear that the actor has found a special place in his heart for the country and is eager for the next chapter in its vibrant atmosphere.
While the couple prepares for their European adventure, Gere’s connection to the U.S. will remain. He shared that he still has a home “in the countryside near New York,” giving the family a foothold stateside.
Gere and Silva’s love story began in 2014 when they met at Hotel Treville in Positano, Italy. The couple’s relationship blossomed quickly, leading to marriage in 2018. At the time of their wedding, a close source described them as “extraordinarily happy,” adding, “They’re so comfortable with each other, have fun together and are looking forward to their future together.”
As Gere’s 75th birthday rolled around in August 2024, Silva celebrated her husband in a heartfelt Instagram tribute, expressing her gratitude for their years together. “After 11 amazing years together, it still feels like the day we first met,” Silva wrote. “The journey we’ve shared, the beautiful family we’ve built, and the memories we’ve created are more than I could have ever dreamed of. You make my life better in every way, and I’m so grateful to have you by my side.”
With a shared commitment to family, Gere’s move represents more than just a relocation. It’s a testament to the strength of his relationship with Silva and the mutual support they continue to show each other. For the Gere-Silva family, life in Spain will surely be filled with new experiences, rich culture, and the warmth of Silva’s loved ones nearby.
