In a surprising turn, Tesla has begun inviting individuals who reserved their Cybertruck as recently as July 2024 to configure their vehicles, including the more affordable $79,990 variant. What’s even more surprising is that the company has seemingly processed its entire 1 million reservation list in just nine days. However, despite this quick pace, the challenge Tesla faces now is converting these reservations into finalized orders.
The issue began with the higher-end Foundation Series, but now even the more economical Cybertruck appears to be facing sluggish demand. After selling over 20,000 units within the first ten months, on October 4, Tesla extended invitations to remaining reservation holders to configure their non-Foundation Cybertrucks.
Declining Interest in the $79,990 Cybertruck?
While the excitement for the futuristic truck was once sky-high, it seems that enthusiasm is cooling. A member of the Cybertruck Owners Club from Texas, known as BayouCityBob, shed light on this situation. “The original US Cybertruck reservation list is exhausted,” he shared.
His personal account further highlights the demand concerns. Bob explained that he had reserved his Cybertruck in mid-July of this year. Just a couple of weeks later, in early August, he was invited to configure the premium Foundation Series. Fast forward to October, and Bob was invited again, this time to configure the standard dual-motor version for a potential October-November delivery.
Below his post, Bob provided screenshots to verify his story, including his original July reservation, Tesla’s invitation for his $79,990 Cybertruck, and his configuration details for delivery.
Tesla’s Surprising Speed in Moving Through the Reservation List
It’s worth noting that Tesla only began selling the $79,990 version on October 4, starting with those who made reservations back in November 2019. Yet, in less than two weeks, the automaker has already exhausted reservations through July 2024.
The rapid pace raises some eyebrows. More concerning is the fact that despite reaching out to so many reservation holders, Tesla seems to be struggling to convert these invites into actual orders. Many potential buyers appear hesitant, choosing not to proceed with their reservations.
A Worrying Trend?
For some, like Bob, the quick turnaround in getting an invite to configure their truck came as a surprise. Others have expressed confusion. A Facebook user named Nathan James shared his experience in a Cybertruck group, saying, “I reserved a Cybertruck in June 2022, which was estimated to be 750,000th in line…Last night, I received this invitation to configure. What gives? If I ignore it, do I lose my place in line? I’m not ready to buy right now.”
This isn’t an isolated case. Another Reddit user, identified as MC1987, reported a similar experience. “I bought my Cyberbeast in the first week of June. I drove it for a couple of months and sold it due to some build quality issues…I just got an email to configure my non-Foundation Series Cybertruck. I thought I would have to wait a couple of years…This is so wild.”
What Does This Mean for Tesla?
Tesla’s ability to process over a million reservations in such a short span should have been a positive sign. Instead, it has revealed a significant demand issue. If even the lower-priced models are not converting into sales, it could be a red flag for the company’s ambitious production goals.
What remains to be seen is how Tesla plans to address this challenge. Will they introduce new incentives or marketing strategies to attract buyers? Only time will tell. But for now, this rapid move through the reservation list points to potential hurdles ahead for the Cybertruck.
