Elon Musk Is Ready to Fight – California Just Lit a Fire Under Him!

California officials have declined a request for more frequent SpaceX launches, sparking a tense response from Elon Musk, who suggested that his political views might be behind the decision. Musk quickly reacted to the ruling, hinting at legal action due to what he perceives as an infringement on his First Amendment rights.

The California Coastal Commission rejected a proposal on Thursday that would have allowed SpaceX to increase the number of Falcon 9 rocket launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The request, made by the US Space Force, aimed to raise the annual limit from 36 to 50 launches, but it failed to gain approval with a close vote of six to four.

Concerns surrounding Musk’s political stance were raised during the commission’s meeting. Commissioner Gretchen Newsom voiced her reservations, particularly pointing to Musk’s controversial social media activity and his stance on FEMA.

“Elon Musk is hopping about the country, spewing and tweeting political falsehoods and attacking FEMA while claiming his desire to help the hurricane victims with free Starlink access to the internet,” Newsom stated before casting her vote against the proposal. She further expressed concerns about SpaceX’s focus on profit, seemingly at the expense of both employee welfare and environmental responsibility.

Caryl Hart, the commission’s chair, supported Newsom’s stance, saying, “You could argue that it’s bringing in politics, but this is a political matter to some extent because it involves the US government, it involves the Coastal Commission.” She pointed out that, while Space Force’s contributions were appreciated, SpaceX’s frequent involvement in political discussions complicated the matter. “We are dealing with a company, the head of which has aggressively injected himself into the presidential race,” she noted.

After the vote, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his frustration. Responding to a Politico article that highlighted the commissioners’ comments, Musk wrote, “Incredibly inappropriate. What I post on this platform has nothing to do with a ‘coastal commission’ in California!” He then announced his intention to sue, writing: “Filing suit against them on Monday for violating the First Amendment… Tuesday, since court is closed on Monday.”

Beyond Musk’s political disputes, the Coastal Commission also questioned SpaceX’s characterization of the launches as federal activities. The military had argued that the SpaceX launches should be exempt from state permits, a point the commission rejected. Hart emphasized the need for SpaceX to secure a Coastal Development Permit (CDP), stating, “It is essential that SpaceX apply for a CDP. There is no other way forward in my opinion.”

Environmental concerns also factored into the decision. Some commissioners commended the military’s recent collaboration with staff on environmental matters, but others worried about the impact of the rocket launches on local wildlife and the effects of sonic booms caused by the launches.

Ravi Chaudhary, an assistant secretary of the Air Force, reassured the commission that the Space Force remains committed to safeguarding the environment and coastal species, emphasizing their dedication to coastal protection.

Despite the rejection, SpaceX is likely to push forward with legal actions to challenge the ruling. Musk’s threat to sue the commission signals that this conflict is far from over, with larger debates about free speech, politics, and environmental responsibility at the forefront.

Business Insider reached out to both SpaceX and the California Coastal Commission for comments, but responses are yet to be received.

This standoff between SpaceX, California’s regulatory body, and the US Space Force may set the stage for a broader discussion about the intersection of technology, politics, and the environment. The upcoming legal battle could have far-reaching implications, not only for SpaceX’s launch schedule but also for how tech companies navigate regulatory scrutiny in politically charged times.
