An Iranian couple, Niloufar Ghazaleh and Mohammad Ali Moghimi, have found themselves in the center of a drawn-out legal battle that has lasted for more than a year. Their case, originating in the Isfahan province, took a dark turn with accusations that ranged from issues of public conduct to an unusual charge involving their pet cat.
The couple’s troubles began when Niloufar Ghazaleh was pulled over by the police for what authorities deemed an “improper hijab.” This seemingly routine stop spiraled into something much more serious. The situation escalated further on October 4 of last year, when law enforcement officers arrived at their workplace, located in a village near Khur city. A confrontation unfolded between the couple and the officers, reportedly over permits and identification cards, according to their lawyer, Milad Panahipour.
The following day, on October 5, the couple submitted a formal petition to the judiciary in Khur, challenging the actions of the police. They claimed the officers had acted inappropriately, raising concerns about their treatment. In a surprising twist, however, this act of resistance led to defamation charges being filed against them, escalating their situation dramatically.
As their legal challenges mounted, the consequences became more severe. The couple faced a series of harsh punishments that shocked many observers. According to Panahipour, the judiciary sentenced Niloufar Ghazaleh to several penalties, including “74 lashes for insulting a police officer, a fine of 240 million rials ($400) for insulting a conscript, 74 lashes for threatening officers, one year in prison and 74 lashes for disturbing public order, and another two years in prison for spreading false information.”
Her husband, Mohammad Ali Moghimi, faced equally surprising accusations. Among the charges brought against him, one of the most unusual was for “threatening public health by keeping a cat.” In total, Moghimi was sentenced to three years in prison—two years for the unauthorized removal of a closure seal on their workplace and one year for the charge related to the cat.
As the case progressed through the courts, the couple fought back against the accusations. Eventually, one of the nine charges against them was dismissed on appeal. Despite this small victory, the remaining penalties are significant. Panahipour shared that Ghazaleh’s ultimate sentence will require her to serve one year in prison, while Moghimi will face two years behind bars.
The severity of the punishments has raised eyebrows, especially considering the unusual nature of some of the charges. The case has gained attention for the lengths to which authorities have gone to prosecute the couple, turning what began as a minor incident into a much more complicated legal ordeal.
The couple’s ongoing struggle with the legal system highlights broader issues within the judiciary and law enforcement practices in the country. What began as a simple traffic stop has evolved into a highly publicized and debated case, one that has led to intense scrutiny of the judiciary’s handling of their situation.
This story serves as a reminder of the complexity and unpredictability of the justice system, where even seemingly minor incidents can snowball into life-altering legal battles.
