An American tourist tragically lost her life to a shark while on a dream diving vacation in Indonesia, turning what was meant to be an unforgettable adventure into a devastating event.

Colleen Monfore, 68, from South Dakota, was swept away by powerful currents during a diving trip near Pulau Reong island. Despite the efforts of the boat’s guide, Monfore could not be pulled back to safety, according to The Sun. Days later, her body was discovered in the most horrifying way—inside the stomach of a shark caught by a local fisherman.

The diving excursion, which took place on September 26, ended in tragedy when Monfore was pulled away from her group by the relentless sea currents. The boat crew tried desperately to bring her back but were unable to combat the strong forces of nature. In a cruel twist of fate, it wasn’t until a fisherman in East Timor caught an unusual shark that the grim truth of her disappearance came to light.

“The shark was caught, but it was not in normal health. I thought it had swallowed plastic or a fishing net,” the fisherman explained. “It was cut open to find the problem, and inside there were the remains of a woman.”

The fisherman’s suspicions led to the shocking discovery. When the shark was cut open, the remains of Monfore, still clad in a black wetsuit, were found in its stomach. Local officials have confirmed that the suit belonged to a diver, but further investigation is underway to officially confirm her identity.

Muhammad Saleh Goro, head of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit for the Management of the Alor Island Marine Park, commented on the case. “We are now investigating the case further to confirm if they are the remains of anyone reported missing in Indonesia,” he said, noting that while the initial findings point to Monfore, nothing is being left to chance. “From the diving suit worn by the victim, it is suspected that they were a diver. The results of the investigation will be published soon after more complete information is available.”

The fisherman who made the discovery shared more details about the shark’s unusual behavior before its capture. He initially thought the shark was ill from ingesting plastic, which has become increasingly common in marine life. However, what he found was far more tragic and startling. A photo circulating from the scene shows the dead shark cut wide open, with what appears to be human remains visible in the background, a chilling image that has shocked the local community and beyond.

Authorities in East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, where the shark was caught, have clarified that while the discovery was made there, it’s still being determined if the incident took place in Indonesian waters. “The anecdotal reports from Timor Leste are that the victim in the shark was foreign female,” Goro said, adding that international cooperation might be needed to confirm the final details of this tragic event.
