North Korea has strongly criticized the U.S. decision to send military aid worth $8 billion to Ukraine, describing it as a reckless act that risks sparking a larger conflict. According to North Korea, this support for Ukraine is an “incredible mistake” that could further escalate tensions between nuclear powers, particularly Russia. These remarks came after U.S. President Joe Biden revealed the aid package during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s visit to Washington. The new military assistance includes longer-range weapons, potentially giving Ukraine the capability to strike Russian targets from safer distances.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and an influential figure in the regime, voiced her concerns about the U.S. involvement in Ukraine. In a statement issued through North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, Kim accused the U.S. of exacerbating the situation and pushing Europe toward the edge of a nuclear conflict. She warned that the U.S. should not dismiss or take lightly Russia’s warnings. “The United States and the West should not dismiss or underestimate Russia’s serious warning,” she said, urging Washington to reconsider its actions.
Kim’s statement went further, suggesting that the U.S. and its allies are taking a dangerous risk by engaging with a nuclear superpower like Russia. She questioned whether the U.S. and the West are prepared to handle the consequences if they continue their current course. “Are the United States and the West really able to handle the consequences as they recklessly play with fire against Russia, which is a nuclear superpower?” Kim warned.
Her words come at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his stance on nuclear weapons. Putin has previously stated that Russia could use nuclear weapons if the country were attacked by missiles and suggested that any strike against Russia, especially one backed by a nuclear power, would be seen as a joint assault. This further amplifies concerns about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the involvement of other major powers.
Kim Yo Jong also criticized the U.S. for what she described as aiding Ukraine in a dangerous “military adventure.” She labeled the announcement of the $8 billion military package as “an incredible mistake and foolish act.” According to Kim, the U.S. decision to support Ukraine in this manner only heightens the risks of a more extensive conflict, involving nuclear threats.
Kim, who holds a prominent position in North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, often makes high-level statements on political and security issues, signaling that her words likely reflect the views of North Korea’s leadership. North Korea has been increasingly vocal in its support for Russia, with both nations strengthening their ties over the past year.
The alliance between North Korea and Russia has grown significantly, with their leaders meeting twice and agreeing to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This partnership includes mutual defense commitments, further solidifying their relationship in the face of global tensions. Reports indicate that North Korea has supplied Russia with at least 16,500 containers of weapons since September of last year. These weapons, according to U.S. officials, have been used by Russia in its war against Ukraine. However, both North Korea and Russia deny any illegal arms dealings, insisting that their cooperation remains within international boundaries.
As the war in Ukraine continues, the involvement of major world powers like the U.S., Russia, and their allies has heightened global concerns. The prospect of nuclear conflict, though still unlikely, remains a chilling possibility as tensions between these nations grow. North Korea’s warning adds another layer to the already complex and dangerous geopolitical landscape, as the world watches closely how these dynamics unfold.
