The FDA has recently issued a recall for specific types of dog food due to contamination concerns. According to the agency, ANSWERS Straight Beef Formula for Dogs and ANSWERS Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs have tested positive for harmful bacteria, including listeria and salmonella. While no illnesses have been reported from these products so far, there is still a risk, especially for humans who may handle the contaminated dog food.
In a statement on its website, ANSWERS Pet Food explained the recall, mentioning that while “Listeria monocytogenes rarely causes illness in dogs, it is possible. Dogs can have mild symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. Even if a dog is not showing symptoms, it can still be a carrier of the bacteria and spread it to humans.”
The company also addressed the salmonella concerns, warning that, “Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only exhibit decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.”
The FDA has advised those who possess the affected dog food to dispose of it immediately. “FDA guidelines recommend any product from the listed lots that have not yet been consumed should be thrown out or destroyed in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it. Areas that may have come in contact with any contaminated food should be sanitized.” To further minimize risks, the FDA suggests using gloves or paper towels when handling the contaminated products and placing them in sealed bags before disposal.
Customers who bought the recalled dog food can also request a refund by following specific steps. “If consumers have any of these lots of products in their possession and desire a refund, please submit a receipt and pictures of the product to [email protected] along with the retailer’s information,” the company stated. For additional inquiries, ANSWERS Pet Food can be contacted at the same email address.
While no illnesses have been confirmed, this situation serves as a reminder of the importance of taking caution when handling pet food, as both pets and humans can be at risk from contaminated products. The FDA’s swift action in recalling these products is crucial in preventing any further complications. As always, pet owners should remain vigilant about the food they provide to their animals and follow any safety guidelines issued by regulatory bodies.
