Vice President Kamala Harris recently echoed a proposal initially championed by former President Donald Trump to eliminate taxes on tips—a move that could greatly benefit the service and hospitality industry workers in Las Vegas and across the nation. This proposal, which Trump announced with great enthusiasm during a Las Vegas rally in June, aims to relieve financial burdens on millions of Americans who depend on tips as a significant portion of their income.
However, Harris’ endorsement of this policy has drawn sharp criticism and accusations of hypocrisy, particularly from conservative circles. Critics argue that her support for tax-free tips contradicts her role in advancing legislation that significantly expanded the number of IRS agents, specifically to target the incomes of those very same workers.
Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany, who served as the White House press secretary under Trump, did not hold back her criticism during a recent segment. After playing a clip of ABC News’ Jonathan Karl highlighting Harris’ newfound position, McEnany pointed out the stark inconsistency between Harris’ current stance and her past actions. “Kamala casts a tie-breaking vote to expand IRS oversight on taxing tips, and President Biden signed it into law,” McEnany stated, drawing attention to the administration’s decision to increase IRS staffing aimed at scrutinizing tips.
McEnany’s remarks didn’t stop there. She questioned the sincerity of Harris’ campaign promises, suggesting that the Vice President’s alignment with Trump’s tax proposal might be a calculated move to win over voters. She also expressed skepticism about the authenticity of Harris’ positions, remarking, “Her administration added hordes of IRS workers to go after waiters and waitresses, and meanwhile, Trump just released his 20 promises to America; I wonder how long it will take Kamala to steal some of those?”
The segment also featured a clip from Senator J.D. Vance, who strongly criticized Harris’ approach to campaigning. Vance accused the Vice President of presenting a different persona depending on her audience, a tactic he believes is fundamentally dishonest. “President Trump is right that she’s a chameleon. She pretends to be one thing in front of one audience and she pretends to be something different in front of another audience,” Vance said. He further emphasized that Harris’ campaign is more akin to a scripted performance than a genuine political endeavor. “She only speaks to voters behind a teleprompter. Everything is scripted. She doesn’t have her policy positions out there,” Vance continued.
Vance also took issue with Harris’ shifting positions on key issues, noting her previous support for policies like fracking bans and police defunding, which she has since distanced herself from. “She should have to answer why she presents a different set of policies to one audience and a different set of policies to another audience,” Vance argued. He concluded his remarks by labeling Harris as a “fundamentally fake person,” whose positions change depending on the crowd she’s addressing.
The Trump campaign seized upon these critiques, further questioning the consistency of Harris’ and Biden’s policy positions. Following a statement from White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, in which she asserted there is no “daylight” between Biden and Harris, the Trump campaign responded with a pointed remark. The campaign took to social media, directly addressing Jean-Pierre and highlighting Harris’ responsibility for several key issues.
“Thank you @PressSec for confirming: there is ‘no daylight’ between Kamala and Joe! Kamala owns the border crisis. Kamala owns inflation. Kamala owns the wars, chaos, and crime over the past 4 years,” Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. This message was accompanied by a clip of Jean-Pierre’s comments from a recent White House press briefing.
During the briefing, Jean-Pierre reiterated the administration’s united front, stating, “[Harris is] going to lay out her vision. But again, they’ve been aligned, you know, they’ve been aligned for the last three and a half years. There’s not been any daylight.” This remark only fueled the narrative that Harris shares full responsibility for the policies and outcomes of the Biden administration.
As the 2024 election cycle heats up, the debate over Harris’ authenticity and policy consistency is likely to intensify. With both Trump and Harris vying for support from similar voter bases, their competing narratives will play a crucial role in shaping public opinion. For now, the focus remains on whether Harris can successfully navigate these criticisms or if they will undermine her credibility as she continues her campaign.
