A father in North Yorkshire was left completely horrified when he discovered the source of an annoying bump in his trainer – a dead mouse that had been lodged there for two months. The discovery left his wife feeling sick and turned their household upside down, blaming the family cat for this unpleasant surprise.
Stephen Pattison, 50, had spent weeks dealing with an odd bulge in his right shoe. Every time he wore the trainer, he felt an uncomfortable lump, but assumed it was just a wrinkle in the lining or perhaps a problem with the insole. Over time, however, a foul smell started to emerge, prompting Stephen to finally take a closer look.
“I thought it was the cardboard in the trainer pushing up or even the gel. It was squidgy. I kept pushing it down hoping it would sort itself out,” Stephen explained.
He initially brushed off the discomfort, continuing to use the trainers despite the irritating bump. Little did he know that he had been unknowingly walking around with a dead rodent beneath his feet the entire time. It wasn’t until his right sock began to reek of ammonia that he decided to pull out the insole and investigate further.
The sight that greeted him was nothing short of disgusting. As he lifted the insole, a squashed mouse came into view. Stephen was immediately hit with shock and disbelief, but one thing was clear in his mind – he blamed the family cat.
“All I could think was ‘Bloody cat,'” he said. “My wife, Sonia, on the other hand, was almost sick.”
Their five-year-old cat, Cinder, had a habit of bringing in live mice as part of her playful hunting routine. It’s likely that this particular mouse managed to find its way into Stephen’s trainer while trying to escape the feline’s grasp. Cinder, known for chasing her prey around the house, usually gives Stephen the task of capturing and releasing the creatures.
“They’re always alive, and she spends a while chasing them around the house whilst I try and grab it,” Stephen said. “She’s a little bugger for it. On this occasion she’s brought it in and it’s hidden from her.”
How the mouse ended up beneath the glued-down insole of his shoe is still a mystery, but it appears that the tiny creature took refuge inside the trainer after being brought indoors by Cinder. For two months, Stephen unknowingly wore the shoe, flattening the unfortunate rodent each time he stepped down.
“What really baffled me is how it got beneath the sole because it was glued down. But I’ve been walking on a dead mouse for two bloody months.”
The bizarre and stomach-turning incident has left the family both horrified and bewildered. Sonia, Stephen’s wife, was especially nauseated by the discovery and had a hard time processing the fact that a decomposing mouse had been inside their home all along.
The story serves as a reminder that sometimes those small inconveniences we brush off can turn out to be far more than we expect. In Stephen’s case, what seemed like a minor shoe issue turned out to be an unexpected and grotesque discovery that neither he nor his family will forget anytime soon.
With Cinder still prowling around the house and continuing her hunt for more unsuspecting mice, Stephen might be double-checking his shoes more thoroughly from now on. It’s safe to say this is one bump in the road he won’t soon forget.
