Verizon, one of the biggest names in telecommunications, is making significant changes to one of its most popular perks, leaving many customers feeling upset. The recent move involves cutting down its AutoPay discount, which has been a favorite feature for many loyal users. Customers have been voicing their dissatisfaction, claiming that this is just the latest in a series of unfavorable adjustments made by the carrier.
Earlier this week, Verizon began sending out emails to its customers, informing them about a major update to the AutoPay discount. The perk, which previously allowed users to save a fixed amount by enabling automatic payments, will soon see a significant reduction in its benefit. For years, this discount has allowed customers to pay a bit less on their bills by automatically deducting payments directly from their bank accounts. However, things are about to change.
This latest modification follows a similar shift earlier this year. As of February 14, Verizon required customers to link either their bank account or a Verizon Visa Card to benefit from the AutoPay discount. Previously, customers could use any debit card. But now, the discount is being reduced even further for those on older plans. Starting next month, many customers will see their discount slashed from $10 per line to just $5 per month.
The email sent to customers read: “While we continue to offer Auto Pay benefits, your $10/line discount will be reduced to $5/mo. and your bill will increase starting on or after 10.10.2024.” Customers were also given the option to switch to Verizon’s newer “myPlan,” which continues to offer a $10 per line discount.
However, switching to the “myPlan” may not be the saving grace it appears to be. While the new plan offers flexibility by allowing users to customize their perks, the old plans often included popular services such as Disney+ and Apple Music at no extra cost. With “myPlan,” customers have to pick and pay for these add-ons, often leading to higher monthly bills. It’s evident that the company is steering customers toward its newer, more profitable offering.
Disgruntled customers have taken to forums and social media to air their frustrations. One user on Reddit wrote: “They have not provided proof that supporting their current level of service at the same price will cause undue hardship… It’s also coercive of Verizon since this is the second rate increase this year.” Many feel that Verizon’s actions have been unilateral, leaving customers with little choice but to absorb the cost.
This isn’t the first time Verizon has hiked its prices this year. In March, the carrier introduced a $4 per line increase for those on older Unlimited plans. Following these changes, several customers have reportedly left Verizon, opting for carriers that offer better deals. “A couple months ago Verizon increased my plan by $10 a month with no extra benefits to me,” said one former customer. “Now today they put out the auto pay discount being sliced in half. I switched over to another carrier where I actually will get more for about $40 less per month.”
For some, the emotional toll of Verizon’s constant changes goes beyond just the financial impact. One Reddit user, who has been with Verizon since its early days, expressed their deep disappointment: “You’ve dribbled out price increase after price increase… You’ve gone too far this time.” It’s clear that Verizon’s long-standing customers feel betrayed by what they perceive as a disregard for their loyalty.
A Brief Look at Verizon’s History
Verizon’s story begins long before the company we know today existed. Its roots trace back to the late 19th century with the founding of Bell Telephone Company by Alexander Graham Bell. This company eventually became AT&T in 1885, dominating the telecommunications industry for decades. However, in 1984, AT&T was forced to break up into smaller regional companies, known as the “Baby Bells,” due to antitrust concerns.
One of those Baby Bells, Bell Atlantic, eventually merged with GTE Corp. in 2000, forming the Verizon we know today. Since its formation, Verizon has grown to become one of the most successful telecommunications companies in the United States. Its wireless division, Verizon Wireless, has consistently been a leader in mobile communication.
In recent years, Verizon has made significant investments in expanding its digital and wireless services, acquiring companies like AOL and Yahoo to strengthen its media presence. Additionally, the carrier has been a key player in the rollout of 5G technology, aiming to revolutionize the way people connect to the internet.
Despite its many successes, recent actions like the changes to AutoPay have caused waves of discontent among customers, threatening to tarnish its reputation. Time will tell if Verizon’s strategy of pushing newer, pricier plans will pay off or push more customers away.
