A government oversight body has flagged a staggering number of active federal credit cards, revealing a massive volume of taxpayer-funded transactions. According to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the U.S. government currently has more than 4.6 million active credit cards, responsible for nearly 90 million transactions in fiscal year 2024 alone.
“The US government currently has ~4.6M active credit cards/accounts, which processed ~90M unique transactions for ~$40B of spend[ing] in FY24,” DOGE stated in a post on X Tuesday.
A detailed report accompanying the announcement broke down the credit card use across federal agencies. The Department of Defense topped the list, handling approximately 27.2 million transactions and managing around 2.4 million individual accounts. The scale of spending across various departments has raised concerns over government expenditures and the efficiency of financial oversight.
Trump, Musk, and the Battle Over Government Spending

DOGE, established under the Trump administration and led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has faced fierce criticism from its opponents. Detractors argue that Musk wields excessive power in his mission to downsize the federal government, accusing Trump of overreach in placing a high-profile businessman in charge of a watchdog agency.
The department has also found itself entangled in multiple lawsuits, as critics attempt to block its efforts to slash federal spending. While legal battles rage on, the administration remains steadfast in its mission to bring transparency to government finances.
Trump Orders Radical Transparency in Federal Spending

Despite mounting opposition, Trump has doubled down on his commitment to DOGE’s mission. On Tuesday, the former president issued a memo instructing government agencies to provide full transparency on their spending habits.
“The American people have seen their tax dollars used to fund the passion projects of unelected bureaucrats rather than to advance the national interest,” the memo reads. It further argues that taxpayers have been forced to bankroll wasteful programs, unnecessary grants, and contracts that do not benefit the American public.

Trump’s directive also highlights concerns over taxpayer dollars funding ideological ventures both domestically and overseas. “For too long, taxpayers have subsidized ideological projects overseas and domestic organizations engaged in actions that undermine the national interest,” the memo states.
Reform on the Horizon? DOGE Promises Swift Action
As scrutiny over government spending intensifies, DOGE has vowed to streamline the federal credit card system, pledging to reduce administrative costs and improve accountability. The agency announced it will provide an update within a week on measures being implemented to reform the program.
“DOGE is working w/ the agencies to simplify the program and reduce admin costs – we will report back in 1 week,” the department posted on X.
With billions of taxpayer dollars at stake, the revelation of widespread government credit card use has reignited debates over financial oversight and fiscal responsibility. Whether DOGE’s reforms will lead to meaningful change remains to be seen, but the agency’s findings have undoubtedly put Washington’s spending habits under the microscope.
